MOSH has been a proud sponsor and supporter of Milwaukee 5k Run / Walk to Irish Fest for years. In fact, on August 18 Dr. Pifel and Dr. Neubauer will lace up their running shoes to race on this fun day. Why? Because the event is a community-driven fundraiser for The Arthritis Foundation. The run/walk is a powerful and public way to raise both funds and awareness for an affliction that impacts 1-in-10 Americans.
The facts are staggering: According to the Arthritis Foundation, approximately 54 million adults have been diagnosed with arthritis. WebMD reports that an estimated 12.1 percent of the U.S. population age 25 or older suffers from osteoarthritis alone.
Arthritis is a catchall term used generally to define joint pain or disease. The severity of arthritis can range from mild, chronic discomfort to whole-body joint inflammation and systemic pain. There are more than 100 types of arthritis. Some of the most common types of arthritis include:
- Bursitis
- Degenerative disc disease
- Gout
- Lupus
- Lyme Disease
- Osteoarthritis
- Osteoporosis
- Rheumatoid arthritis
Fitness Helps
Arthritis affects people of all ages and is a leading cause of disability in the United States. People are often surprised to learn that exercise can sometimes alleviate some of the pain and stiffness associated with arthritis. This is why a fitness-themed event like the Run/Walk to Irish is so fitting and beneficial.
The fundraising goal for the Irish Fest Run/Walk is $60,000. All funds raised will be dedicated to fighting arthritis and supporting people who suffer from it. At the time of the writing of this blog, the event was only 42% to meeting its goal. If you’d like to participate in the event or donate, please visit the Irish Fest Run/Walk registration page. The Arthritis Foundation has a big mission and needs big support to make progress.
